The Children Called Him Uncle Vanya eBook Harold Strunk Reviews

This book has peaked my curiousity to go study what historically happened during this time period. Harold has done a great job personalizing history. We can learn a lot from the past. Hopefully for the better = )
This short story is by an author who obviously knows his history. He tells it beguilingly.

The story is based on what actually happened on a huge scale in the USSR. I found it an easy way to learn history as it is the story of one man. But it's more, much more, than that.

Five stars.
I'm enjoying reading Harold Strunk's short stories. He is a very intelligent man, He has great knowledge of history. His love for mankind comes out boldly in his stories. In this story of Uncle Vanya, he paints an insightful picture of what it would have been like to be held captive after the war. I could picture Uncle Vanya, I could feel his pain, and his loneliness. I felt deep love for this man. I wanted to jump into the story and bring him home.
The Korean War is often referred to by historians as the "Forgotten War." Like the war itself, the tragic issue of Americans Missing-in-Action or held Prisoner-of-War (POW/MIA) has also been forgotten. We Americans live in a bizarre world, a world where only one American tourist can be reported missing from a plush oceanside beach-resort and the international media, especially the American segment, will erupt into a virtual reporting frenzy lasting months and sometimes even years. All of this interest in finding American tourists while at the same time , with the lone possible exception of annual POW/MIA Recognition Day, some 87,000 American heroes from all five services from across all 50 states are almost totally forgotten. Author Hal Strunk has artfully crafted an intriging, thought provoking account of one possible example of an American serviceman who adapted to his surroundings, after being abandoned by his country he cherished so much. Were there more real American POW/MIA's as the "Uncle Vanya" mentioned in Hal's tantalizing account? Hal's story certainly stimulates our consciences, as well as our patriotism to the point that we cannot help but think about the courageous young Americans who went missing while fighting for freedom and democracy for mankind. This provides stark contrast to the greedy, seedy American businessmen who wait like vultures to rush in and expand commercial and economic ties with secretive China and a rigid, unrepentent and unremorseful North Korea. Hal's heartrending account of one American POW who served, and who might still be serving, will give us pause to pause and contemplate what trully is at stake...our national honor.
Great story and I'll bet there were a lot of these guys.
A good read. I'm reading his next work now.
This was a beautiful story. It calls for a second story about their lives in Russia. Very informative picture about Americans who couldn't return to America but had to create a life for themselves in their new country. Emma
This story was very intense. I really couldn't believe how the soviet Union treat those people during the war time. It showed me how life was during that time , where nobody had no rights, and compare it to this time in America, everybody has it so much better. I couldn't be that lady Helen, who couldn't say goodbye to her husband and all she wanted to do was go back to America. So sad I probably would of gone kinda crazy to. I really enjoy this story, I learn alot about the history of the Soviet union.
